We also offer support and education for family members and caregivers to improve overall communication in daily life. With our experienced therapists and comprehensive approach, we strive to achieve positive outcomes and enhance the quality of life for our clients.
Assessment and Treatment
Integrated Speech Pathology offers expert assessments, tailored treatments, and support for individuals with aphasia and selective mutism. Our experienced speech-language pathologists, Donna Spillman-Kennedy, M.S., CCC-SLCP, and Christina Luna, Ph.D., provide a comprehensive approach to treatment using evidence-based techniques, including AAC and LSVT.
AAC
Augmentative and Alternative Communication
There are various forms of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) that can help children, teens, and adults with considerable speech or language impairments communicate effectively. These options can include solutions ranging from facial expressions, hand gestures, writing, and drawing to electronic devices. Since each individual's communication needs are unique, it is essential to work with a qualified speech-language pathologist who can develop a personalized combination of AAC tools that meets the individual's needs and preferences.
We have the training, skills, and experience to address any complex communication and medical needs, including:
The experienced speech pathologists at Integrated Speech Pathology can help develop the most suitable AAC system for you or your loved one and provide hands-on training on its uses. We go beyond in-office training, accompanying our clients as they experience real-world situations in schools, homes, grocery stores, and the community to ensure they can use their AAC tools effectively in their daily lives.
Aphasia
Aphasia is a disorder that can significantly impact one's ability to communicate and affect speech and how a person writes and understands language. This condition is often caused by neurological events, such as strokes or brain injuries, which can damage the areas of the brain responsible for language processing. In some cases, such as primary progressive aphasia, it may be caused by diseases or conditions that affect the brain. At Integrated Speech Pathology, we are dedicated to helping our clients with aphasia regain their ability to communicate and interact with others. When provided with appropriate treatment and support, individuals with aphasia can lead fulfilling lives and stay connected to their loved ones.
Integrated Speech Pathology stands out in its approach to treating aphasia and primary progressive aphasia. Our individualized speech and language therapy is tailored to each client, focusing on retraining language skills and teaching alternate forms of communication. We collaborate closely with our clients to develop treatment plans that address their unique needs and goals. By employing evidence-based techniques and strategies, we strive to help our clients regain their communication abilities and enhance their overall quality of life.
Our therapists at Integrated Speech Pathology are expertly trained and have decades of experience working with individuals with aphasia. We understand this condition's challenges and are committed to providing a comfortable and supportive environment for our clients to enhance their communication skills. Our therapy sessions encompass exercises to improve speech and language and strategies for coping with communication difficulties.
Moreover, our therapists extend their support to family members and caregivers. We educate them on effective communication strategies with individuals who have aphasia. This comprehensive approach improves overall communication and reduces frustration for individuals with aphasia and their loved ones.
Selective Mutism
Selective mutism is a social communication anxiety disorder that can significantly impact a child's ability to communicate effectively. It typically presents itself when a child is between three and eight years old, and it is essential to have the child evaluated as soon as possible to determine whether they meet the diagnostic criteria for selective mutism. Unlike shyness, which may occur across all situations and is a personality trait, selective mutism is a social anxiety disorder that results in the inability of a child to speak at all in certain situations while speaking fluently in others. It's important to realize that selective mutism is not the result of trauma and that it requires specialized treatment to address it. As such, caregivers must seek help from trained professionals as soon as possible after onset to minimize academic impacts and improve outcomes.
At Integrated Speech Pathology, we understand the unique challenges children with selective mutism face. Our highly trained therapist, Donna Spillman-Kennedy, M.S., CCC-SLP, has the advanced training and experience to assess speech-language issues, diagnose selective mutism, and create individualized treatment plans tailored to each child’s needs that address communication across environments. We believe in a collaborative approach with caregivers, schools, pediatricians, mental health professionals, and other specialists to provide comprehensive support for children with selective mutism.
Donna's treatment approach focuses on helping children overcome their social anxiety and develop the skills to communicate effectively in any situation. This includes providing tools and real-world experiences in various environments, including at home, school, and in the community, to increase their social comfort levels gradually.
