AAC Augmentative and Alternative Communication

AAC
Augmentative and Alternative Communication

Various forms of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) can help children, teens, and adults with speech, language, and communication challenges express themselves more effectively. These options can include a variety of non-technology and technology-based solutions. Our speech pathologists provide assessment and training for the use of AAC systems as well as assistance in obtaining speech-generating devices. Each individual's communication needs are unique, and it is essential to work with a qualified speech-language pathologist who can develop a personalized combination of AAC tools that meets the individual's needs and preferences.

We have the training, skills, and experience to address any complex communication and medical needs associated with:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Aphasia and Other Neurological Disorders
  • Down Syndrome and Genetic Disorders
  • Visual Impairment
  • And More.

The experienced speech pathologists at Integrated Speech Pathology can help develop the most suitable AAC system for you or your loved one and provide hands-on training for its use. We can go beyond in-office training, accompanying our clients as they experience real-world situations in schools, homes, grocery stores, and other community settings to ensure they can use AAC effectively in their daily lives.

Aphasia

Aphasia

Aphasia is a disorder that can significantly impact one’s ability to communicate. This can affect both speaking and understanding what is said. Reading and writing might also be a challenge. This condition can be caused by neurological events such as strokes, brain injuries, or other brain disorders. At Integrated Speech Pathology, we are dedicated to helping our clients with aphasia and primary progressive aphasia to communicate and interact with others. When provided with appropriate treatment and support, individuals with aphasia can lead fulfilling lives and stay connected to their loved ones.

Our therapists at Integrated Speech Pathology are expertly trained and have decades of experience working with individuals with aphasia. We understand these conditions and are committed to providing a comfortable and supportive environment that enhances our clients’ skills and reduces communication frustration. Our therapists provide education, coaching, and strategies to support individuals who have aphasia as well as caregivers and family members.

Our individualized therapy is tailored to each client, focusing on functional communication and language skills. Treatment may also include the use of AAC. We collaborate closely with our clients and their families to develop treatment plans that address their unique needs and goals. By employing evidence-based techniques and strategies, we strive to help our clients improve their communication abilities and enhance their overall quality of life.

Selective Mutism

Selective Mutism

Selective mutism is a social communication anxiety disorder that can significantly impact a child or teen’s ability to speak. It typically presents itself when a child is between three and six years old. Unlike shyness, where a child is quiet and reserved across all settings and situations, selective mutism results in the inability to speak fluently under specific conditions. The most common place where children and teens are unable to speak is at school. Children are usually able to speak at home with family and other familiar people with whom they are comfortable. Level of comfort can also vary according to location or setting. The ability to speak with others changes from person to person and place to place.

It is essential to have the child evaluated as soon as possible to determine whether they meet the diagnostic criteria for selective mutism. It's important to realize that selective mutism requires specialized treatment to address it. As such, caregivers must seek help from trained professionals as soon as possible after onset to minimize academic impacts and improve outcomes.

At Integrated Speech Pathology, we understand the unique challenges children with selective mutism and their families face. Our highly trained therapist, Donna Spillman-Kennedy, M.S., CCC-SLP, has the advanced training and experience to assess speech-language issues, identify selective mutism, and create individualized treatment plans tailored to each child’s needs that address communication across environments. We believe in a collaborative approach with caregivers, schools, pediatricians, mental health professionals, and other specialists to provide comprehensive support for children with selective mutism. This includes providing tools and real-world experiences in various environments, including at home, school, and in the community.

LSVT Lee Silverman Voice Treatment

LSVT
Lee Silverman Voice Treatment

Whether you or a loved one is experiencing difficulties with speech and communication, our LSVT treatment programs may be the solution you’ve been looking for. Integrated Speech Pathology offers LSVT treatments to maximize speech intelligibility (understandability) for adults with a range of medical conditions that affect voice and speech, including Parkinson's disease and atypical parkinsonisms such as progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), and has also helped speech issues resulting from stroke and multiple sclerosis. Children with Down syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, and other conditions who experience difficulty controlling the volume of their voice and rate of talking and have speech that is hard to understand can also benefit from this treatment. An extensively researched and evidence-based intervention, LSVT is an individualized exercise program that strengthens the voice box (larynx) and speech system. It trains people to use more normal loudness and rate when speaking at home, work, and in the community. It supports greater comfort and confidence while talking and can provide a greater overall quality of life.

Our LSVT Treatments include:

  • LSVT LOUD®

This evidence-based and clinically proven method trains adults with Parkinson's Disease and other neurological conditions to use their voice at a more normal loudness level and with better clarity while speaking in all environments.

  • LSVT eLOUD®

For individuals with transportation challenges or physical limitations that make regular in-person therapy difficult, our LSVT eLOUD program offers online speech therapy as a convenient alternative. LSVT eLOUD also allows for convenient involvement from family and caregivers.

  • LSVT LOUD for Kids®

Our newest program, LSVT LOUD for Kids®, is specifically tailored to children with motor speech disorders. Through intensive therapy and the principles of neuroplasticity, our certified speech pathologists aim to reorganize brain connections and improve communication skills.

The speech pathologists at Integrated Speech Pathology are highly skilled in speech-language assessment and LSVT Certified therapists. Treatment is built upon individualized exercises and practice programs incorporating family and caregiver supports. We understand the importance of early intervention and offer LSVT programs to improve current symptoms and provide maintenance support, “Tune-Up” sessions. Early treatment will often lead to the best results, but it’s never too late to start.
